WORKSHOP A
Machine to Machine (M2M) communication using the 4G communication standard for the utility sector
Machine to Machine (M2M) communications concept is a key enabler for the future utility networks. Smart grid is the first example of the machine to
machine communication concept where different entities in the electricity grid will exchange information autonomously to implement various advanced
functionalities such as demand management systems. Exchange of information over a large distributed area will be facilitated by communication
networks, actuators and sensors without any human intervention. The M2M architecture will be extended to other sectors such as water & gas
suppliers, road traffic systems, asset management, public safety systems, e-health care, etc. An M2M communication system is a complex structure
consisting of communications, control, computing and other relevant discipline based engineering.
This workshop will introduce the M2M concept and draft standards that have been developed by various bodies such as IEEE, ETSI, ITU, etc. A key
focus will be on the possible roles and benefits of the M2M concepts in different utility areas. The facilitator will also discuss the enabling technologies
such as the 4G wireless standard; the sensor networking standard and the key components of a future utility network. Industrial speakers will join the
session to present their views and experience on the development of M2M communication systems such as the smart grid, as well as introduce the
international research outlook in the area.
